In My Father's Foxholes and Footsteps
From Italy comes a new book on the 10th Mountain Division - "In My Father's Foxholes and Footsteps" with photographs by Cruz Rios and assembled by Andrea and Giuliano Gandolfi, is a photographic narritive of one soldier's time with the 10th Mountain Division in WW2 Italy. The idea for this book began in May 2006 during the latest veteran's reunion tour in Italy in 2006. While visiting the room of the original memorabilia of the 10th Mountain Division at the Museum of Iola di Montese, the son of Cruz Rios showed the Gandolfi's the personal photographs which helped to create this book. This is how it all started, with great enthusiasm and the desire to share these historical images and passionate events which have characterized this period in history. Procedes from the sale of this book will be donated to the Museum of Iola di Montese and other charities.

This 160 page book is printed in Italy, in both Italian and English, and is available through:

What'd You Do in the War, Dad? by Robert W Parker
This book by Robert W. Parker (87-E, HQ) about a soldier's life during WWII takes the reader from the Aleutian Islands to warfare in the Italian Alps. The stories are sometimes grim, sometimes humorous, always fascinating first-person accounts of adventures in the 10th Mountain Division. Parker tells of living in the snow at 11,000 feet and 40 degrees below zero and of unknowingly building a bonfire atop a Japanese mine. He writes of hearing German guns on night patrol, crouching in foxholes beneath a barrage of enemy shells, and of learning the difference between the Geneva Convention and murder. The book's more than two dozen stories are a vivid recollection of the years between 1940 and 1945, when Bob's generation wrote timeless chapters in U.S. wartime history. The book is available from QP Distributing, 22167 C Street, Winfield, KS 67156, or by phone at 800-214-8110.

Soldiers of the Mountains: The Story of the 10th Mountain Division of World War II by Norma Johnson
Norma Tadlock Johnson searched school libraries and found almost no interesting books about WWII written for young people. Her book, intended for young adult readers, is also of interest to a general audience, including those who may know little about the history of skiing and military organization. Dedicated to the memory of her husband, Lt. Elvin R. Johnson (86-L), the book covers the formation of the Division, training, Kiska and Italy, and the role of 10th veterans in the post-war ski industry boom. Norma was assisted and encouraged in this endeavor by Sherman L. Smith (87-G) and Bob Carlson (86-L). The book is available from Publish America LLLP, Baltimore, MD. The web address is www.publishamerica.com, or phone 301-695-1707.

The Boys Of Winter by Charles Sanders
The Boys of Winter tells the true story of three young American ski champions and their brutal, heroic, and fateful transformation from athletes to infantrymen with the 10th Mountain Division. Sanders's fast-paced narrative draws on dozens of interviews and extensive research to trace these boys' lives from childhood to championships and from training at Mount Rainier and in the Colorado Rockies to battles against the Nazis. Ullr Award-winner, International Ski History Association. "Sanders . . . puts a personal face on the 10th Mountain Division and connects the reader more intimately to their story. It was, and is, a compelling story, and Sanders tells it well."

"Pack On - Memoirs of the 10th Mountain Division" by A. B. Feuer
This history of the 10th Mountain Division during World War II focuses on the personal experiences of the mountain troops who served in Alaska and Italy. Feuer conveys the opinions expressed by the veterans about the conduct of the campaigns—both the good and the bad, with no holds barred. Senator Bob Dole provides a foreword. This fascinating account also reveals the differences in training and strategy from those employed by German ski troops of the same era. A selection of personal photographs, useful maps, and a timeline allow the reader to follow the progress of the 10th in Italy. In addition to combat accounts, readers will find reference to the harsh realities of war. This book is available from Stackpole Books, 5067 Ritter Road, Mechanicsburh, PA 17055.

One Soldier's Story by Bob Dole
Before he became one of America's most respected statesmen, Bob Dole was an average citizen serving heroically for his country. The bravery he showed after suffering near-fatal injuries in the final days of World War II is the stuff of legend. Now, for the first time in his own words, Dole tells the moving story of his harrowing experience on and off the battlefield, and how it changed his life.

Speaking here not as a politician but as a wounded G.I., Dole recounts his own odyssey of courage and sacrifice, and also honors the fighting spirit of the countless heroes with whom he served. Heartfelt and inspiring, One Soldier's Story is the World War II chronicle that America has been waiting for.
