MONUMENTS AND MEMORIALS
The
Foundation's first and most significant project was the
erection of an impressive red granite monolith atop
Tennessee Pass, Colorado, not far from the wartime site of
Camp Hale and the Cooper Hill ski training area. This
Memorial Monument was completed in 1959 and was dedicated on
Memorial Day of that year. Upon its gleaming surface are
etched the names of our 992 comrades (this number increased
to 999 in 2001 as a result of the Database Project research)
who made the supreme sacrifice on Kiska and in Italy. Since
1959 a Memorial Service has been conducted annually on the
Nationally observed Memorial Day. Additional memorial
services are held on special occasions.
In
addition to the continuing maintenance of the Memorial
Monument, the Foundation provides funds for flowers to be
placed every Memorial Day at the grave sites of the 327
soldiers of the 10th lost in battle and who remain interred
at the American Military Cemetery near Florence, Italy. The
Foundation arranges for a wreath to be displayed at the
official Memorial Day ceremonies. Flowers are also provided
for monuments honoring the 10th Mountain Division erected by
Italian villages in the battle zone.
YOUR
FOUNDATION IS FOREVER
Your continued support of the Tenth Mountain Division
Foundation is most appreciated. In 2008 the Foundation hired
an Administrative Director, Frankie Barr, to perform the
Foundation’s day-to-day administrative functions. Annual
administrative costs continue at about 1.5 % of the
Foundation principal.
The Foundation Board membership now
consists entirely of descendants. The last three WWII
veterans retired from the active Board in 2009.
The Honorary Board of previous veteran Board
members and the Advisory Board of National Association
Chapter Presidents provide guidance to the active Board.
The
Memorial Day ceremony at the Tennessee Pass Monument to
honor our KIA comrades draws 200-400 veterans, family,
friends, military representatives, public figures and
members of the public every year. Other 'good works' the
Foundation funds to honor the men of the 10th includes among
others: college scholarships, support to the Resource
Center, support for museums featuring the 10th,
winter and mountain sports opportunities for children and
for our wounded warriors returning from active duty
protecting America’s interests at home and abroad. A major,
permanent 10th Mountain Division Exhibit has been installed
at the Colorado Historical Society Museum. Your Foundation
is contributing to this exhibit and many other “good works”
to ensure the legacy of the 10th Mountain Division is
preserved for future generations. Please consider continuing
your gifts to the Foundation and including a bequest of
funds to the Foundation in your will.
FOUNDATION BOARD
Elected officers are:

The balance of the

of the Blizzard.
Final minutes from the most recent annual
Board Meeting are available by mail request to Frankie Barr
at the Foundation address or by email to

COLLEGE ASSISTANCE SCHOLARSHIPS
TENTH MOUNTAIN
FOUNDATION BOARD APPROVES CHANGES TO SCHOLARSHIP
PROGRAM FOR 2010-2011 ACADEMIC YEAR.
At the July 2009
annual meeting in Denver, Colorado of the Board of
Directors of the Tenth Mountain Division Foundation, the
Board approved the following revisions to the Tenth
Mountain Division Foundation Scholarship Program. By
adapting the scholarship criteria to meet the ever
changing demands of society, the Board reaffirmed the
strong commitment to education by the World War II 10th
Mountain Division veterans.
In the 2010-2011
academic year, the Tenth Mountain Division Foundation
will grant up to five $5000 scholarships to financially
needy direct descendants or legally adopted direct
descendants of the 10th Mountain Division veterans who
served with the Division during World War II. This
one-time scholarship will be awarded to a direct
descendant who has successfully completed two years of
study (and/or a minimum of 60 credit hours), and who
demonstrates a knowledge, understanding, and support of
the history and legacy of the 10th Mountain Division.
Each scholarship provides $5,000 for full-time,
undergraduate or graduate study at an accredited
college, university or other comparable institution.
Scholarships can be used only for payment of tuition,
books, or other directly related academic costs. Only
one direct descendant per veteran may receive a
scholarship benefit during a five year period.
The Tenth Mountain
Division Foundation Scholarship Committee is currently
working out the details of the revision, which will take
effect in the 2010-2011 academic year. All Tenth
Mountain Division Foundation scholarships awarded prior
to this time will remain in effect and be fulfilled.

THE RESOURCE CENTER
In
1987 the National Association created the "10th Mountain
Division Resource Center" located in the Denver Public
Library and the Colorado Historical Society. These
organizations, in cooperation with the 10th Mountain
Division National Association and the Foundation, have
created a vast repository of 10th Mountain memorabilia.
There are preserved, more than 1000 individual collections
of several thousand photographs, records, documents, maps
and personal papers as well as three-dimensional artifacts
all of which have been donated by 10th Mountain Veterans and
their families. Extensive information about the collection
is now available to researchers, film producers and others
through an international database in 16,000 libraries
throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. The
Association and the Foundation share funding for this
archival work.
A
database has been completed by John Imbrie (85-C) and his
committee, which lists some 33,000 soldiers who served with
the Tenth during the WWII period (November 1941 through
November 1945). This database is now housed in the Resource
Center. Queries regarding this database can be made through
the Resource Center.

10TH MOUNTAIN DIVISION HUT ASSOCIATION
In
1982 the 10th Mountain Division Hut Association was created
as a publicly funded not-for-profit organization, in
cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service, to plan, finance,
build and manage, for public use, a mountain hut system.
Today there is a network of rustic lodges linked by more
than 300 miles of open country trails, old logging roads and
turn-of-the-century railroad grades surrounding old Camp
Hale. Here the cross-country skier, hiker or mountain biker
is provided with a marvelous high alpine wilderness
experience. One of these huts was funded by the Tenth
Mountain Division Foundation and is appropriately named "The
10th Mountain Division Hut". An endowment fund exists for
each hut to cover long-term maintenance. The nightly charges
for these huts pays for the cost of firewood and general
maintenance.
Many other huts in the system were funded by and built in
memory of 10th Mountain Division men. For hut reservations
call (970) 925-5775. Further information on the hut system
may be obtained by clicking
HERE.
OTHER PROJECTS
From time to time, the Foundation has been, and will
continue to be, called upon to help fund other
worthwhile projects. Included among these have been
such efforts as improvements in the Camp Hale
National Historic Site. For further information on
the Camp Hale project, please click
HERE. Only programs of
interest and concern to "the men of the 10th", the
original Foundation donors, are considered.
