DUKW SEARCH & RECOVERY REPORT

A DUKW Narrative

This is the story of an amazing exchange of e-mails beginning on March 19th 2002 with an e-mail letter from the Air Attaché's Office at the U.S. Embassy in Rome, Italy regarding facts surrounding the sinking of a DUKW in Lake Garda. What followed was a detective story with many "witnesses". The story is not yet finished, but Government security has capped it for the time being. Read on!

What is a DUKW you ask? It is a WWII amphibious vehicle, widely used to ferry troops and supplies over relatively short water routes. Many were used in the Normandy landings and in the Pacific Theatre. Essentially, it is a standard military 2½-ton 6x6 truck with a bathtub shaped body and a propeller. Here's what they look like:

DATABASE SEARCHES

The Tenth Mountain database has been one of the most valuable projects undertaken in the past few years. The database covers the service of 30,000 soldiers who were assigned to the Division and all sub-units, or were mentioned in daily reports from inception to the Folding of the Colors in 1945. Family members who are looking for more information about a soldier's service with the Division in WWII are encouraged to contact any of the Database contacts:

Dennis Hagen (Resource Center) dhagen@denver.lib.co.us
John Imbrie (Database Chairman) John_Imbrie@Brown.edu
David Little (Webmaster) TenthA86@qwest.net

Dennis Hagen at the Resource Center is fielding an average of two to three requests from family members and researchers daily, and has recently added more information to his search. With access to enlistment records, Dennis can now confirm date and place of enlistment, pre-enlistment occupation and marital status at time of enlistment. Dennis is now handling the majority of all queries.

These database members can search the database for division units served with, locations and assignments, highest rank and awards & medals earned. If futher information is desired, the staff at Denver Public Library can research further, or family members can contact the National Archives to obtain copies of a soldier's service records.

At this time, the records only cover the 1941 - 1945 time period.
